COVID-19 Update

March 13, 2020

Dear Staff and Families,

As you may have heard, it is believed there has been a community-based transmission of COVID-19 in San Diego county.  In response, all gatherings of 250 or more people must be cancelled through the end of the month.  Any seniors over the age of 65, persons with underlying illnesses, or anyone possessing any symptoms of illness are being asked to refrain from public activity.

Medical experts are finding children in areas of high exposure to be resilient and experiencing only slight symptoms; however, they can be infectious to others in the home and community.  As such, we are cancelling all field trips, social events, and learning center instruction through April 10.  In addition, we are arranging for virtual parent meetings the week of March 23.  School Directors will be working with school staff on modified work and schedules.

We are continually monitoring the situation, and information seems to be changing at a rapid pace.   Please check for announcements each day for updates.

I know this goes without saying, but this is an interesting time for our community, as well as our world.  It is indeed a test of our compassion.   We are doing our best to be thoughtful of everyone’s perspective and safety and appreciate your patience and cooperation.

What You Should Know

When children and youth watch news on TVabout an infectious disease outbreak, read aboutit in the news, or overhear others discussing it,they can feel scared, confused, or anxious—asmuch as adults. This is true even if they live farfrom where the outbreak is taking place and areat little to no actual risk of getting sick. Youngpeople react to anxiety and stress differentlythan adults. Some may react right away; othersmay show signs that they are having a difficulttime much later. As such, adults do not alwaysknow when a child needs help. This tip sheet will help parents, caregivers, and teachers learn some common reactions, respond in a helpful way, and know when toseek support.
